You will show the video on Hamlet by SparkNotes twice in your classroom. You will put your students into groups of five. Each student will get a sheet with ten questions on it to answer while they are watching the video. There are three different sets of sheets (SHEET1, SHEET 2, and TURN IN SHEET). There are five different sheets in each set (A,B,C,D,E). Starting with the first set (SHEET 1) each student will get a different sheet (A,B,C,D,E). Each sheet has ten questions on it related to the video. No two sheets share any of the same questions. As the students are watching the video, they are answering the questions on their sheet.
After watching the video the first time, the teacher hands out the second set of sheets (SHEET 2). Each student takes the same letter sheet (A,B,C,D,E) that they had on the first sheet. They now have a completely different set of ten questions. No two sheets in this set share any of the same questions. The students answer questions on their sheets as they are watching the video a second time.
After watching the video twice, you have the students get into their groups. You give the groups the TURN IN SHEETS that are lettered A,B,C,D, and E. They are instructed to take the same lettered sheet they had on the previous two sheets. The TURN IN SHEET has ten questions from the video that they have not answered on the previous sheets. Together in their groups, using the notes they have, they work answer the questions on the final sheet.
You can use this preview Hamlet or to just give your students some initial contact with this great play. It is very good cooperative group activity as the students will be interdependent on one another to answer questions on their TURN IN SHEETS.
