Literature circles are a great process for all level of readers, but especially for the advanced ones. They can keep your advanced readers progressing even when you cannot meet with them for a regular guided reading session. It does take a few meetings with the group to “train” them on the process and the expectations for the literature circles. Once they know what to do, you can let them go to run their own guided reading lesson!
Discussion questions don’t need to (and shouldn’t) be used all the time during literature circles, but they are a good place to start when kids are stuck or when literature circles are just getting started.
There is no RIGHT way to do it!
