Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson and Monster by Walter Dean Myers are necessary books to teach and have available for students in upper middle grades and early high school. They are accessible, important, engaging books that encourage GREAT discussion about important topics such as racism, privilege, and what role we all play in creating a safer and more tolerant society.
In my class, I teach this unit in literature circles, and this unit plan includes so much... everything necessary to run literature circles in your class! I typically split the class up into boys and girls, letting boys read Monster and the girls read Piecing Me Together. This unit plan includes units for BOTH of these books and everything needed for each book. The books have overarching themes, settings, and characters, making them easy to teach together.
I LOVE this unit. This 52 page guide comes with EVERYTHING you need, from journal prompts, to daily lesson plans, to discussion guides based on Bloom's Taxonomy to a final essay, rubric, and group evaluation.
You will not regret buying this unit and using it as an easy, planned, standards-oriented way to teach some important lessons and open up a healthy way to discuss topics that need to be discussed!
