In this unit, students will work together to understand and enjoy The Secret Garden. This resource provides both PDF and Google Slides versions for both an abridged version of the novel (Great Illustrated Classics, Adapted by Malvina G. Vogel; ISBN-10: 1577658094/ISBN-13: 978-1577658092) and the original, allowing for differentiation in both presentation and content in your classroom. In this unit, students will think about what they read, write responses to this novel in their discussion logs or complete assigned jobs, and will discuss their ideas in small groups with other students. In this process, students will identify themes, analyze vocabulary, and recognize writing techniques. This unit provides the teacher with the organizational structure to form literature circles in a 5th through 7th grade classroom for any novel. Along with teacher directions for six to eight fifty-five minute lessons over a period of four weeks, it includes the following:

•PowerPoint Presentation on Book Setting (editable)

•Schedules & Calendars (editable)

•Jobs for Literature Circles

•Discussion Log Directions for Literature Circles

•Teacher Notes with Samples of Jobs and Discussion Logs

•Discussion Log and Jobs Rubrics (editable)

•Literature Circle Discussion Guidelines

•Prompts to Help Move a Literature Circle Along

•Basic Structure of a Literature Circle Discussion

•Evaluation of Discussion Rubric (editable)

•Teacher Guiding Questions on The Secret Garden for both the original and the Great Illustrated Classics abridged version for each scheduled literature circle meeting

•Vocabulary Tests for both the Great Illustrated Classics abridged and original novels

Along with PDF copies, you will also be given access to links that will allow you to open the unit files in Google Slides. You can edit these file as you like and share the files with your students. The slides can be printed and adapted for students who prefer to answer the questions by hand. You can also view and print a student’s completed version of the slides.

If you are interested in a literature circle plan that contains just resources for the original version of the novel, please check out Literature Circle for The Secret Garden - original version at my store.

I have found that students enjoy Literature Circles and that they are a great way to help develop interpersonal skills and complex levels of thinking. I hope that this curriculum is helpful to you and your students.
