I have found that literature circles are incredibly beneficial to any reading curriculum. I remember reading about them and saying to myself, “Yeah, right! Like that will really work!” To my surprise, it worked like magic. My students were enthusiastic about their books and excited about reading in general. I have not found a greater motivator for reading than literature circles.
This is a brief overview for setting up literature circles within your classroom. After teaching literature circles for several years, this quick guide highlights what works best for my own classes. The suggestions you will find in this quick guide are geared toward fifth grade but can be modified as necessary. With simple adjustments, I honestly believe literature circles can be developed and used with children and adults of all ages.
