Literature circles are a great way to get children to begin talking about the books they love. They are great for all grade levels, enhancing comprehension and higher order thinking skills. They are not used in place of guided reading or another prescribed reading program. Literature circles and book clubs are a fun way to get students to realize how enjoyable reading can be.
The following are lists of jobs that can be assigned to your students while in literature circles. The directions for each job are contained on each job page. You may also choose to not have jobs at all and have students record reading responses daily in a journal or post its to share with their group weekly. I’ve included a Daily Reading Response Journal for students, too, if you choose to go in that direction.
