This literacy strategy involves having students read a small portion of the book The Alchemy of Air and then discussing the major points in an interview setting.
I use this activity with my 9th grade students in Earth and Environmental science. This text references the discovery of synthetic fertilizer, which allowed for increased crop yields. The scientific discovery took place during the beginning of World War 2, which provides a very interesting context for student discussion. There are many ethical, scientific, and moral decisions to provide for extended learning opportunities.
