A Mystery Theme inspired Literature Circles packet that can be used throughout the school year, or can be used for one book (a mystery or crime story would be perfect) or one quarter. I use different Literature Circle themes each quarter so my students are always highly engaged in their Literature Circle assignments!
Just think! Your kids can have the following roles:
Ask the Right Questions (detective)
Keys to a Summary (keys)
Captivating Connections (fingerprint)
Word Search (magnifying glass)
Poetry Prisoner (prisoner)
Visualization Expert (police officer)
Passage Thief (thief)
You have a Way with Words (con artist)
Story Reporter (reporter)
I love using Literature Circles in my classroom, but I have found that as the year progresses, my students get a little bored with the same job sheet format! I created these for students to use while reading one title (I created other themes as well).
I put one of each form into a three prong folder and the students must rotate jobs and complete one of each sheet by the time they end the book. There are some weeks when they combine two shorter jobs together (like poetry and visualization). They have to plan out the pages they will be reading for the entire book and record them in the chart provided so everyone knows their assignments!
Using themes for each book has really increased my students' engagement and interest in the Literature Circles in our classroom! I hope you have success as well!
