Description

This package provides all you need to set up and run Literature Circles in your classroom. By assigning roles, as outlined in this package, students accountability increases and their thinking deepens. This package can be used for Literature Circles with books of any genre at any reading level.

What's Included:

♥ Role Cards (Ink Friendly and Chalkboard versions)

- Assign roles or have students self-select roles.

- Print and laminate. Place these in a pocket chart with student names beside, magnet to the whiteboard and write student names beneath, or pass out to individual students.

- Tent fold role cards are also included for students to place in front of themselves during discussions, if you wish.

♥ Conversation Starters (Ink Friendly and Chalkboard versions)

- Use these to help guide group conversations.

- Print one for each student to use as a bookmark.

♥ Job Description Posters (Ink Friendly and Chalkboard versions)

- Project on a big screen when introducing the roles.

- Print and laminate the role cards for student reference throughout Literature Circles.

♥ Role Criteria Poster (Ink Friendly and Chalkboard versions)

- Alternatively, print and laminate this one summary poster to ensure everyone knows what's expected of them.

♥ Student Response Sheets

- Each role has a unique response sheet.

- A “Job Log” is included to help students keep track of their progress.

- Use the group work reflection sheet during and at the end of the unit so students can self-assess their progress

♥ Teacher Planning and Assessment Sheets

- A planning page to sort students into groups by novel.

- A tracking page to sort students by role per chunk.

- A marking sheet to assess students by chunk (either with points as determined by the teacher, or with the headings from the marking rubric – your choice).

- Student marking rubric to use at the end of the unit to assess students (be sure to share with students at the start of the unit so they know what is expected of them).

The 6 roles included are:

♥ Word Wizard (looks for new and unknown words to define)

♥ Artful Artist (illustrates the context of the story)

♥ Passage Picker (selects passages for the group to discuss)

♥ Capable Connector (makes connections to text, self, and world)

♥ Discussion Director (creates a list of questions for the group to address)

♥ Travel Tracer (traces the setting of the story)

Chalkboard themed and ink friendly versions are included. The ink friendly versions are on white backgrounds. Print on your favorite colour cardstock to coordinate to your classroom theme or print each role on a different colour to help with organization. This resource contains Canadian spellings.
