This is one of 5 roles that can be used during your first few Literature Circle units. I found having designated roles to be the easiest and most effective way to invest students in the idea of thinking while reading, holding them accountable to reading outside of class and creating content for them to discuss during Literature Circle discussions.
I teach each role to the whole group and then assign them individually. Each Literature Circle has five members who are each assigned different roles (Role 1: Summarizer, Role 2: Visualizer, Role 3: Word Detective, Role 4: Inferencer and Role 5: Symbolizer). These role sheets are best used when you initially implement a Literature Circle structure in your classroom and should be weened off of these sheets whenever you find students are beginning to have more authentic conversations in their groups.
