These passages were created specifically for close reading and helping the students gain a deeper understanding of the text. This resource matches and is meant to be used with the Close Reading Mega Kit: A Guide to Close Reading for Grades 4-6 which you can find here.

These resources can be used separately but they work best in conjunction with each other.
Using the steps in the kit (linked above), give the students the text that matches the standard and the bookmark or task card from the Common Core Mega Kit. Have the students read the text repeatedly, answering the questions from the Close Reading bookmark or task card each time they read. The students can use a response journal or use the printables available.
Each passage contains ONE extended response prompt that requires the students to use the knowledge they gained from each close read and apply it to an essay like question. This part of the resource could be used for summative assessments or further evidence of mastery of the standard for standards based reporting!
An answer key is not provided due to the nature of the responses.
