PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

START YOUR {DISCUSSION} ENGINES! This set of ready-to-print, black-and-white discussion cards features 30 different questions that can be used with any fiction story. They also make excellent journal entries. Each encourages thinking, discussion, and use of evidence from the text.

Discussion cards are divided into three levels of difficulty:

Jump Starts are questions for discussion groups or those who need some prompting to get a discussion going. These questions/prompts cover the basics of plot structure and character development.

Cruisers are questions for groups that are moving smoothly and need some new ideas to tackle. These questions move into the analysis of literary elements and ask students to apply knowledge to different situations.

Accelerators are for those who need more of a challenge. These questions may ask students to make judgments, to infer, or to compare ideas.

I created these for my middle-school literature circles to use when they run out of their own questions. They can be used in many ways:

~ create a deck that students can draw from
~ assign particular numbers as part of discussion
~ copy just one set for your use, and as you walk around listening to groups, pull a random question to ask.
~ use individual questions as entries in journals

I created enough sets for each discussion group in my classroom. Each page of cards was copied onto a different color of cardstock. On Tuesday's discussion, I might hand kids the red cards. On Friday's discussion, I might hand them the blue ones. This makes it easy to keep track of which questions kids have already talked about, and if you only give them a few at each discussion, makes it simple to provide them with new and interesting things to get their brains churning.

Blank cards are also included in this PDF printable so that you can add your own.
