Looking for reading response questions to ask with any literature text? These response stars address the 3rd through 5th grade CCSS literature standards and incorporate close reading type questioning, as well.
Each CCSS R.L. strand (Key Ideas & Details, Craft & Structure, & Ideas) has 20
reading response stars to practice those standards. Also included are 15
bonus response stars to cover additional higher order thinking skills. That's a total of 75 reading response stars!
Simply print the stars on colored card stock. Then cut out the stars and tape them onto popsicle sticks. I store them in small buckets from the Target Dollar Spot.
While reading any fiction text, I have kids pick a reading response star and we discuss that question. It adds a level of excitement for my students. They enjoy picking a question and begin "in charge" of that star. They lead the discussion and act as the teacher. It sure beats me asking the questions all the time!
These questions are written to encourage students to look back in the text and find evidence to support their answers. They are required to look closely at the text and dig deeper into what they're reading.
