This is a packet of skills that can be used with a small text or a chapter book or novel. It starts with a BEFORE reading preview of the text and then has a DURING reading broken into four sections so the text can be sectioned out. There are various skills to be discussed in a small group meeting or literature circle. Then comes five AFTER reading skills. The first skill is character types chart which include identifying main/minor and static/dynamic. Analyzing word impact is next. Two of these are included to be used as it fits the text. This flow chart requires students to think about word choice and why/what the author used that particular word. The next graphic organizer is identifying story elements. This allows students to identify characters, setting, problems, key events, and solution. Making connections encourages students to think about the text and how they can connect to or relate to it. There are some probing questions to get students thinking about how they connect. The final skill is determining central idea and details. It also includes a place for the students to write a summary to see how ideas and details work together to tell the text.
