This is a great project that I used as a culminating activity at the end of the year, but it can be adapted to fit anywhere.
Students were given a disposable camera, but since cell phones are everywhere, I allowed cell phones and digital cameras to be used as well. If they used the disposable I gave them, I had the photos uploaded to a CD for them to use digitally. (I wrote a small grant to get the money for the cameras and development.)
This unit includes:
A Task Page
List of genres to choose
A guide of taking good photos - The Rule of Thirds
Guide on Working with Photos in a document
A copyright Template page
Guide on creating an Author's Choice Page
Checklist page for publishing
The students had a blast with this unit, but it did take several class periods of independant work on computers, and my guidance and assistance one on one at the beginning. Then, the students became the experts and were helping each other. They were a lot of fun to read as well!
