Students will learn how to use an indicator to identify if unknown substances are acids or bases with this Litmus Paper Lab activity. There's a PowerPoint presentation for whole group discussion and a lab response sheet for students.
Teachers will need to set out 14 liquids around the classroom for students to test with litmus paper. I use substances like vinegar, soapy water, baking soda water, soda, shampoo solution, and so on. I place a baggie of red and blue litmus paper at each station with a brown paper bag to use as a trash can.
Students rotate at their own pace identifying if the "unknown" substances are acids or bases. They fill out the student response sheet as they go. When everyone is finished (or time has been called), we go over the names of all the substances to see if the students' predictions were correct.
