This is a Novel Study to go along with the book "Little League: Play Ball," by Matt Christopher.
There is a "before reading" research project that can be completed by the students to give them some background information on the setting where the story begins, and also the famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio.
During reading, there are a variety of comprehension questions to go along with the book. There are about 3 comprehension questions per chapter, and some chapters have been combined. There is a variety of unfamiliar vocabulary in this book. Students are presented with these unfamiliar vocabulary words and will need to look up the meaning of the words via a dictionary. They are then required to use the word in a sentence, illustrate the word in a way that helps them remember the meaning of the word, find a synonym or antonym for the word, and so on. Students do not do every activity for each vocabulary word. The activity varies by chapter and number of words. There are also questions throughout the book in which students are asked to relate to their own life experiences and share their decisions and thoughts.
After reading the book, students can write a review and opinion of the book and if they would recommend the book to others.
This book is appropriate for higher level 3rd graders, 4th graders, and 5th graders.
