Includes all the pieces for the flannel board game "Little Mouse, Little Mouse" and script for the activity. I have included extensions and materials for children to make a book with positional words included as well. This is kind of a fun addition to Twas the Night Before Christmas too! Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse!
We all know that Classification, Position and Patterning are important Math Skills!
To group or classify objects, children must notice the objects’ properties or attributes and make decisions based on them. Knowledge of positions is key to giving and following directions, and words such as above, below, top, bottom, first, and last are used constantly in the classroom and in life. You can suppliment the activity by asking children to place the little mouse in different postitions. While using these materials you will also be reinforcing color awareness, left to right movement for reading, following directions, and giving directions as well as strengthening speech and language skills.
Put the little mouse NEXT TO the blue house.
Put the little mouse BELOW the green house.
Put the little mouse ABOVE the purple house.
Let’s line up the houses! Put the Yellow house first, then the orange house, and then the pink house last. ***this is also teaching left to right movement which is a pre-reading skill.
Possibilities are endless. You can do this on a flannel board, by simply printing the pieces all on heavy weight card stock, and laminating them. Then add a velcro dot or two and they will stick to the flannel board. IF you don’t have a flannel board, you can buy a yard of flannel for about $3.00. Just attach it to the top of an easel or mount in a frame.
You can also use the materials on a table and play with the pieces that way.
