Here's a fun, engaging game that will become an interactive literacy center, once modeled. This would tie in nicely after reading a story like "If You Take a Mouse To School".
Print out cards, cut and laminate. Print the mouse (and birds). You will only need one animal for the game. The extras are in case you lose one. Be sure the animal cards is slightly smaller than the alphabet cards.
Place all the cards in a pocket chart.
Discreetly place the mouse behind one of the alphabet cards.
Chant: Little mouse in the yard,
Are you hiding behind the ‘M’ card? (or whatever card the child wishes to choose.) If the mouse is behind the ‘m’ card, the student ‘wins’. If not, give another student a chance to chant and find the mouse.
My students love the interaction, when playing in small groups or pairs. They don't even realize they are learning. Step it up a notch with sounds too.
Have fun. Thanks for stopping by!
