- student planning sheet for Little Star, Little Star book; features 24 winter/holiday words from which students choose 10 to write and draw in their books. The 24 ‘words’ are actually adjective + noun combinations.
- two versions of the Little, Star, Little Star book: one that is fill-in-the-blank, and one for students who are comfortable writing sentences.

NOTE: To reduce the page number for purchasers, I did not run 10 pages of each book. I provided enough for you to have master copies. You can then just run what you need.

Little, Star, Little Star is based on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle. Reading that book is a great starter to this activity – it gets kids thinking about sequence and rhythm in a fun and familiar way!
 
I’ve provided a ‘planner’ for students to use before they begin writing in their books. The planner is a list of 24 different winter and holiday words. Students choose 10 of those words, circle them, and then work off of that planner as they write their books. I included this for a number of reasons. Having something like a concrete ‘list’ of words to work with is so helpful to those little ones who “don’t know what to write.” And yet, you want to avoid telling them ‘what’ to write. Having a wide variety of words available strikes a balance between helpful scaffolding and individual choice. And of course, students are not limited to this list of words. They can absolutely generate their own ideas! The most important thing, in my experience, is to have those words identified prior to starting out with the actual writing. It keeps kids organized, it gives them a plan from which to work, and if for any reason your kids’ work is interrupted, their ideas are still on paper for next time!
