Using Harcourt story Little by Little, I start the year of by looking at theme, character traits, and inference. I start with vocabulary and reading aloud the story to model, discuss, and teach strategies on first day. Using comprehension packet, on grade level students work in partners to share read story again (fluency) and work together to compete while I read Intervention Basal with my lowest students repeating the first day modeling, discussion and teaching of strategies. On following days, they work with leveled readers to apply what they learned. Finally, they take their assessment on appropriate leveled story (grade level or intervention).
