End of unit project/ assessment task which corresponds to the Liveability topic for the year 7 Australian Geography Curriculum. Students need to apply what they have covered in class into a research task. The research task requires students to compare a top 10 liveable city to a top 10 least liveable city.
Note: this was used within a school that has a one-to-one device program (iPads). But the task can still be completed, provided that students have access to the internet.
How it works:
Students need to create an AVD (annotated visual display) for two cities (one for each city). They need to select 5 images to represent 5 factors which contribute to the liveability of the city. They will need to explain how and why the selected factors contribute to the city being within the top 10 liveable or top ten least liveable. They then need write a concluding paragraph, comparing and contrasting the two AVD’s and the two cities they explored.
Time (how I used it):
30 min to go over project and explain it, answer questions etc.
Allocated 2 weeks for students to complete as a homework task.
Key skill focuses:
-Locating, Recording and Interpreting Data
- Compare and Contrast of cities across the globe
Correlated to AusVELS as best as it can be until full Australian curriculum is confirmed and released for geography. It is a word document, so can be altered once everything is confirmed.
Note: To stay consistent with the yearly update of liveable and least liveable cities, the project city list will need to be updated every year- this is recommended in order for students to be kept up to date with current information.
