This unit was developed to be used in a first grade classroom. I used this with my own first grade class. It can be modified to work in Kindergarten or second grade as needed. Begin this lesson with an introduction of the vocabulary. Display the vocabulary words on the word wall. Each vocabulary word has a corresponding picture to aid in meaning recognition. Four mini books are included that break the unit up into four areas:
• Living and Non-Living Things
• Animal Needs
• Animal Groups
• Animal Growth and Change
The mini books are assembled by cutting them out and stapling in page order. There are a few activity sheets that go along with the theme:
• Main idea Diagrams
o These can be filled out with pictures or words. I have the students draw pictures ( I teach an intervention class)
o There is one diagram for each animal group and one for animal coverings.
• Cut and paste sheet
o Students need to cut out pictures and paste them either in amphibian or reptile section.
• Mammal work sheet.
o Students circle the pictures of mammals.
• Writing worksheet
o Students draw a picture about the lifecycle they find the most interesting and write about what they drew.
• Categorizing living and non-living things
o Students cut and paste objects into the proper category
• Animal groups worksheet
o Students cut out pictures and paste in proper group
Included assessment can be given when unit is complete.
This unit is designed to take about six 40 minute lessons with the assessment given on the 7th day. This can be modified depending on the level of your class. This will take me anywhere from 7-9 days depending on the day.
