I use this activity to introduce biology to students in grades 3-8. For ELL students or younger children, I print it out in color (the categories and items are color-coded). For more advanced students, black and white is fine. In groups, students cut out and categorize all of the items into multiple categories, starting with producers and consumers. Then they take consumer examples and sort them into herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and decomposers. The students can easily understand and organize the information. I then extend the activity by having students search their science books for other plants and animals and add them to the appropriate category. This is a "CLOSED" word sort because I provide the categories, but if you want to make it an open word sort, don't cut out the category names and let the students make up their own categories.
