This PDF includes two inquiry activities:
Inquiry 1: Is it living?
Students will complete a checklist for each living/nonliving thing:
-white tailed deer, geese, apple tree, bean sprout, sun, water
They will draw the conclusion that all living things need food, water, air, shelter/protection, and space. If it needs all five of these things, then we know if is living. (VA SOL essential understandings)
Inquiry 2: What do all living things do?
Students will complete a checklist for each living thing:
-white tailed deer, frog, bean plant, butterfly, tree, human
They will draw the conclusion that all living things grow, reproduce (start new life), and die. This is called a life cycle. All living things have a life cycle.
Both inquiry activities include six picture cards and a checklist for students to work in small groups/with partners and discuss. You could also project each card and have students complete the checklists independently if you'd rather.
