As a high school art teacher I’ve watched my students wrestle with a number of issues related to the art room, one of them being creativity. Each year as new groups of apprehensive students have sat in front of me I have been presented with a nagging question, “Where does creativity come from?” The result is what you are now reading. My attempt to discover where creativity comes from is not intended to be an exhaustive academic investigation but rather to peel back the layers and invite an “Ah-ha!” moment to occur. My intent was to search, discover, and become informed in order to encourage and inspire those students who are convinced they are not “creative.”
Living the Creative Life has been written as a series of four articles that may be read through as a whole or individually. I have used these articles as a part of my first week’s curriculum to address some of the fear students may have as they begin their art experience. All of my students have told me they deeply appreciated this information as it helped them to realize they truly were creative.
