A lab to help scholars observe the difference between a living and non-living sample, using a microscope! This lab comes JUST before we introduce the words CELLS! Students make wet-mount slides of sugar and a cheek swab, and draw their observations of each sample. The goal is to get students to see what they are made of, and to ask questions about what it is they are looking at!
This lab falls early in our study of cells, in alignment with the NGSS standard MS-LS1-1; students must conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells;either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells
Also, it might help to follow up this lab with my introduction to cells text!
NOTE: Don't be scared off by the PowerPoint! It's how I format all of my class materials.
