NOTE: You will need a set of local fold-out maps for this activity. You can often get these for free at your county or city engineer's department. Once you get them, you can use them for years.
This is a solid and engaging map skills activity! It can be used when you need 1-2 hours of hands-on time for the kids, a worthwhile plan for a substitute to use, or any time you need a fun and meaningful geography activity with 4th graders and up.
Kids will learn where exactly they live- sounds simple, but many will not know even where to start to find their home when given a local map. They will then become experts at reading their local map and see how everything is related.
Questions include, "How do you get from your house to the nearest McDonalds?" "What direction is your house compared to the school?" And, "How many straight line miles is it from your house to the nearest hospital?"
This product will walk you through the teaching to do prior to kids starting this activity, things to point out on the map before they start and what to do with early finishers.
My twenty questions can be customized to work with nearly any detailed city, county, or regional map that has a legend or key. Note: This will not work with a state map.
