Help your students master the transformations of exponential and logarithmic functions with this hands-on Card Sort Activity! Students will match equations and graphs to strengthen their understanding of how transformations affect the parent functions y = e^x and y = ln(x).

Perfect for Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, or any course covering function transformations, this activity encourages critical thinking and collaborative learning.

✅ What’s Included:

  • 4-part Card Sets: Equations, Graphs, Asymptote Equations, and End Behavior Descriptions
  • Printable formats
  • Answer key for easy grading or peer checks

Skills Practiced:

  • Identifying vertical and horizontal shifts
  • Connecting equations to graph features
  • Distinguishing between exponential and logarithmic behavior

Classroom Uses:

  • Math Stations
  • Partner/Group Work
  • Review and Reinforcement
  • Exit Ticket or Assessment
  • Sub Plans (easy to implement!)

This card sort promotes a visual and conceptual approach to learning—students don’t just memorize transformation rules, they discover and apply them through comparison and reasoning.

Also Available: An investigative activity integrated with Desmos Graphing Calculator for enhanced digital exploration!

Make transformations of e^x and ln(x) interactive, engaging, and effective with this card sort activity—your students will thank you!

Transformation with vertical and horizontal shifts

Met expectations
Great value
Standards-aligned
I liked that the only transformations were vertical and horizontal shifts as I introduced this topic. It was ingenious to use the same symbol for the happy face and μ to avoid confusion. I especially enjoyed the discussion that graph #11 generated and the students' excitement when they realized the asymptote contained the solution.

I’m so glad it worked well for you and your students! I’m all for keeping log and exponent graphs simple as they can get complicated fast!
