Six great logic puzzles that will help your students develop their critical thinking skills. My students love these puzzles - sometimes I use them as a bellringer, sometimes I use them as a transition activity - especially for students that finish their work early. They are also great as a part of emergency sub plans.
The puzzles have a sports theme, but don't let that fool you into thinking they aren't applicable except in a PE class - they are great for developing critical thinking and logic skills in any classroom environment!.
Sports are basketball (three different puzzles), softball, flag football, and a fitness challenge. In these sports-themed puzzles, students are asked to employ skills such as greater/less than and arithmetic - as well as be able to use clues such as, "...the person that ran the fastest did the fewest sit-ups..." or "Regina’s points and rebounds combined were five less than Brittani’s points and rebounds."
The fitness challenge logic puzzle also asks students to complete two writing prompts. Students are asked to determine who won the fitness challenge and to support their claim with evidence. There are multiple right answers to the prompt, so students will have to consider the evidence and make an argument for one group or the other.
Suitable for any content - every student in any class benefits from improving their critical thinking! This puzzle is probably most suited for grades 5 - 8; younger students could complete this with some support, older students will still enjoy the challenge - they'll just finish a bit sooner :)
Where space allows, I included each puzzle as 2-up to save paper; in addition, each puzzle comes in two versions for printing: one with blank space for working, and one with a logic grid. There is a separate page with the two writing prompts.
Of course, answer keys are also included :)
