Ahh. Logical Fallacies, our favorite right? When teaching rhetorical analysis and argument, I like to include a mini-unit on logical fallacies and how argumentation is usually littered with them. I start out this unit with reviewing 8-10 of the most common logical fallacies and then follow it up with this commercial assignment. Our students need to know that not only in rhetoric or argument are these fallacies present—they are everywhere! It is nearly impossible to drive down the street or on a main highway, and not try to be persuaded by someone or something. This assignment/presentation has students choose a commercial or billboard/advertisement, include context, what they are selling and/or trying to persuade you to buy, include the fallacy, and then create a presentation (using Google Slides or PP) to present to the class. I have my students present these, but it really is up to you on what you choose. It can be as formal or informal as you like. I also included a Word version of this assignment so you can adjust the requirements of this assignment to fit your students’ needs.
