This word sort contains a variety of words with the long A sound. The spelling patterns it includes are "ai", "ay", "a consonant e", and "a". The sort is set up as a basic table, where students search through the scrambled words to correctly sort the words in the table, based on how they are spelled. There are certain words that are underlined and in bold that I have used as vocabulary words to teach, while reinforcing the spelling pattern during word work. As students sort through the words, I have them read the words to themselves as they sort them to help with fluency. I have found this is a great tool to differentiate for my more advanced first graders, who are ready to begin internalizing how many of these long A words are spelled.
