Then and Now: How are things different now than they were a long time ago? A great addition to your Social Studies coursework while studying about community, this resource contains both a create-a-book and the option to complete the same passage in a one-page format.
Create-a-Book:8-page mini book (with large or small image options). Students fill in the blanks (words are provided on the image cards).
One-page alternate option (to save paper or for older students)
Follow up activities;
- Long ago and now sorting activitiy
- Comparing with Venn diagrams (transportation, communication, food, school, and clothing). Great as a group activity, particularly for younger students.
- Writing page (alternate to Venn diagram activity)
**Please note** I have marked this for K, however it is best suited as an individual or small group activity for 1-3 (passage is 100+ words). If you have reading buddies or a multi-grade classroom, this is a wonderful reading buddy activity. The buddy will be able to read the passage, and your K kids should be able to color and read most of the words on the image cards with the help of the image.
This file is also bundled with Long Ago and Now Sorting Cards:

Create-a-Books are great for sub tubs, or when you are short on time but still want to squeeze in a short activity on a themed topic. They work well for your reluctant writers or receptive-leaning learners, as there are only a few blanks to fill in, but they require an understanding of the text to choose the right word and image for the context. There is a sense of accomplishment that comes with completing each book, and if you do many Create-a-Books, each student will build a library of his own creation.
