There has been a gradual move away from the use of phonics in the teaching of reading in recent years in favor of less structured methods. I suggest that there is a place for phonics alongside the other methods to give balance and boost independence and comprehension.
I would like to reintroduce this wonderful tool and show how effective phonics can be in producing independent readers who are not afraid to tackle more difficult material on their own because of the confidence that phonics instills in them. Students no longer approach reading material in fearful anticipation of the unknown words, but rather recognize the simplicity of using the phonetic tools to sound out words quickly, thus allowing for better comprehension.
A whole group approach that targets the top students works best. I found that the students who were less sure of themselves were stimulated by the discussions and the interest of the rest of the class was engaged. The whole group approach lends itself to natural discussions of a variety of concepts as they emerge in the sounding out of the list of phonetically grouped words. The opportunities to integrate reading, writing, and English (even math, science, and social studies) concepts are immense. Integrating the concepts in the context of an array of words brings about a level of mastery not usually found when teaching these concepts in isolation.
This Long Ii word list provides practice in the following areas: simple phonics rules, recognizing the long Ii sound, sounding out unfamiliar words, comprehension, sentence structure, dictionary skills, listening skills, following directions, word endings, singular & plural, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homonyms, prefixes and suffixes, parts of speech, contractions, possessives, compounds words, very basic syllable rules, multi-meaning words, and more.
The short “stories” also provide opportunities to work on comprehension, inferred meanings, context clues, using inflection and emphasis to draw out the meaning behind the words, expressing their comprehension by illustrations, and having fun reading. There are 5 stories – one for each day of the week. This file contains 27 pages to print.
Also included: Concepts Chants* that help students retain the information being discussed during these activities. These chants, using snaps, claps, voice inflections, fun sounds enable the students to repeat and memorize these concepts quickly. As they encounter the concepts in the word lists and stories, the chants serve as easy reminders. An audio version of these chants is available on this site.
