If your students need practice distinguishing long vowel sound spellings, these clip card activities will make a great literacy center, word work center, or early finisher activity. Includes 16 clip cards for each of the following long vowel spelling patterns:
• Long A:
ay, ai, a_e
• Long E:
ee, ea, e_e
• Long I:
ie, igh, i_e
• Long O:
oa, ow, o_e
• Long U:
ew, ue, oo, u_e
Students will look at the picture on each card and use a clothespin to clip the correct spelling written on the side of the card. Students will have to carefully apply their knowledge of the spelling patterns to clip the correct spellings and will build their ability to visualize the correct spellings of these words through repeated practice. Clip cards are also a great way to build fine motor skills!
To prolong their use, I recommend laminating these cards or printing them on sturdy cardstock.
You can make this resource self-checking by placing a dot or sticker on the back of the card, or ask students to record their answers on the attached recording sheets. Two recording sheet options are included for each long vowel sound. One contains handwriting lines, the other does not. Choose the option that best meets the needs of your students. Answer keys are also included for your convenience.
A mixed practice recording sheet is also included. Pair this with clip cards from various sets to review.
