Long vowels made easy! Each vowel has 2 weeks of activities that include tons of Common Core Reading Foundational Skills that incorporate fluency, phonics, spelling, and games to keep students motivated. The stories each feature "Phonics Friends" characters. My students love these characters and often go back to reread the stories in their book boxes. I use this unit for Daily 5, homework, small group and whole group work. Included are two versions of each vowel unit for differentiation. In my first grade class this unit has helped with teaching long vowels and fluency reading. This would also be an excellent way to review long vowels at the beginning of second grade or in a combination class.
The unit contains:
Wall posters (cards) for vowel spelling patterns for each long vowel
Week One activities that focus on the word in isolation: sorts by sounds, sorts by language standards, and graphing phonics activities.
Week Two activities that focus on the spelling patterns in context of an engaging text. Activities include: word hunts, sorts, graphing, tracing/testing (partners), 3 reading passages for each vowel.
Assessment: Pre/post (summative), 5 progress monitoring for each vowel (easy to give 1 minute/student)
This is similar to my other long vowel word work units (without as many games/activities). If you own those, the passages are the same. I mixed the super sorts and the reading and I changed the fonts. If you have questions, please email me or ask:)How to get TPT credit to use on future purchases:
