This interactive PowerPoint lesson was created to go with lesson one of the Houghton Mifflin Journey's program. Week one addresses long vowels. This PowerPoint explains long vowels, gives students practice seeing and saying the sounds, and then has a short multiple choice assessment at the end matching long vowel sounds in words. First we review generally what vowels are. Then, after discussing long vowels, I have kids underline the long vowel sound in each example word on the board. Have the kids take the assessment together orally, privately on scratch paper, or using mini white board.
