Your students will have lots of fun practicing to read words with the long vowel sounds using these five games! Each game focuses on a different long vowel sound, and includes many different spelling choices for that sound.
Print and laminate the games. Cut up the cards, and use the cover card to keep them organised. Each game has 48 word cards and 4 ‘sound cards’, to make a total of 52 game cards.
Students play in a small group. They take turns to pick up a card and read the card. If they read the card correctly they keep it in front of them. If they get one of the ‘sound cards’ (Quack!, Boo!, Hoot!, Ribbit!, Kaboom!) they return their cards to the pile and play continues. Using the ‘sound cards’ means that the game can continue until you are ready to pack up.
Alternative uses for these cards include: printing two copies and using them for Memory, Snap or other matching games; taking a card, copying the spelling and drawing a picture to match; sorting the cards by the spelling choice for the long vowel sound; or playing the cooperative learning game Quiz, Quiz, Trade. (Google it, it’s my class’ favourite warm-up!)
