We spend the first few months in first grade studying short vowel spelling patterns and reading short vowel words. Then, we move on to long vowel patterns and, WOW, are they tricky!?!
Here is a set of 6 different long vowel word sort activities (one for each vowel, with 2 for long e). Each set includes 4 word family heading cards, 20 long vowel words to sort, and 1 recording sheet for students to record their words on.
I use these as a word work activity. Students pick a spot on the floor and sort their cards under the headings and record them on their handout. They LOVE it! If they finish early, they use their words in sentences on the back!
The sorts include the following word families:
Long A: ace, ate, ake, ale
Long E: eak, eek, eap, eep
Long E: eal, eel, east, eat
Long I: ice, ile, ike, ine
Long O: oke, one, ole, ote
Long U: ute, ue, use, une
