Product Description
New research is validating the importance of integrating phonics (encoding) and spelling (decoding) instruction for beginning and remedial readers. Both phonics and spelling rely on the same letters to sounds relationships: phonics translates symbols to sounds and spelling translates sounds to symbols. In other words, phonics and spelling are two sides of the same coin. To read and write well, our students must acquire the tools to become both codebreakers and codemakers.

Louisa Moats comments on this research: “Catherine Snow et al. summarize the real importance of spelling for reading as follows: ‘Spelling and reading build and rely on the same mental representation of a word. Knowing the spelling of a word makes the representation of it sturdy and accessible for fluent reading.’ In fact, Ehri and Snowling found that the ability to read words ‘by sight’ (i.e. automatically) rests on the ability to map letters and letter combinations to sounds.”

Long Vowels Connected Phonics and Spelling RtI Lessons

Each phonics workshop lesson takes 20 minutes to complete. The first lesson is teacher-led and uses phonics cards (provided as digital masters for you to copy and cut. You and your students will love these 89 colorful animal sound-spelling and consonant blend cards!) The teacher begins the second, third, and fourth lessons with review and assigns activity-based worksheets. Students complete the three worksheets and self-correct to learn from their mistakes. The fifth lesson is a short formative assessment to determine whether the student has mastered the phonics pattern.

The connected spelling lessons consist of self-guided worksheets, which explain the spelling pattern, provide examples, include a spelling sort, plus a word jumble, rhyme, and/or book search. Students self-correct to learn from their mistakes, and then complete a short formative assessment to show whether the student has mastered the spelling pattern.

The teacher mini-conferences with individual students or groups to grade and review the phonics and spelling short formative assessments and briefly re-teach if necessary. Simple and effective Response to Intervention reading instruction!
