Let's be honest with each other: poetry can be intimidating for students and their teachers, and layers of imagery, symbolism, and metaphor paired with complex syntax and diction are enough to strike fear into the hearts of even our most accomplished students. But it doesn't have to be this way.
Jason Reynolds novel in verse, Long Way Down, provides students with an entry into poetry through the compelling story of Will Holloman. Having just witnessed the murder of his older brother Shawn, Will must decide if he will live by the "Rules" which govern their community, or forge a new path. Reynolds shares Will's story with readers through accessible poems that capture the raw emotions Will feels while still providing middle school and high school students with access to high quality poetry.
This product includes poetry analysis guides for nine sections of the text. Each worksheet covers 2-5 poems, and provides students with opportunities to explore the most common poetic elements. In addition to guiding question, students are provided with definitions (in footnotes) for unfamiliar poetic terms and vocabulary. These worksheets can be used as a pre-writing tool, guided practice opportunities, or discussion questions.
Bonus: A bonus discussion questions sheet is included free of charge to help guide your classes post reading discussion.
