Differentiated phonics practice for long a that makes it fun. This unit includes tons of Common Core Reading Foundational Skills that incorporate fluency, phonics, spelling, comprehension, and games to keep students motivated. The story features one of the "Phonics Friends", Kayla and her brother Jake. My students love these characters and often go back to reread the stories in their book boxes. The unit is differentiated to meet the needs of many learners. I use this unit for Daily 5, homework, small group and whole group work. I use the stories and sorts to initially teach the concept of long e spellings and then I use the games and other work to continually review during word work time. There are two versions of this unit. The first is at a slightly higher level and version two has scaffolds. There is enough here to spiral long a instruction so that kids can review if needed. I also added a math/reading connection with the Graph it! activity. This would also be an excellent way to review long vowels at the beginning of second grade. The unit contains:
6 differentiated fluency stories that feature long a spellings
Comprehension questions that go with each story.
Fill in sentences
Trace, Read, Write
2 differentiated mini-books (black/white and color copies)
Find Your Partner (2 versions-one focusing on spelling, the other on meaning of words)
Roll and Read game boards (4 versions)
Write the room
Graph it! (math/reading connection activity -4 different versions -2 scaffolded)
