Long and short vowel spelling with silent e ("magic e") can be confusing for many students. I found that many students mixed up words such as “snack” and snake”, or “back” and “bake.” "Write the Room" is a fun and easy way to help practice spelling long and short vowels (CVCe and CCVCe).
There are 12 cards each for the vowels a, i, o and u and 12 cards with mixed vowels. (There are not many cvce words for “e” so I left that one out.) I included 2 different recording sheets (regular lines and handwriting lines), as well as an answer key.
To use, simply print and cut the cards (they print equally well in color or black and white) and hang them around the room. Copy a recording sheet for each student. Students walk around the room, reading each sentence and recording the word that best completes each sentence. I made the sentences relatively easy so there would be no doubt which word belonged! You can also place the cards in a center and have students work to complete the sentences with a partner or small group.
