Game #1- Long /i/ Mix and Match
For this mix and match activity, the students will place the misspelled words in order from #1-#27. They will then find the correctly spelled word that matches each misspelled word. This acivity can be completed in a pocket chart or on a magnetic board. (You can place magnets on the back of cards to make them magnetic.) As the students sort the fly cards, they will also use their decoding skills to read the correctly spelled words. After sorting the cards, they will write the misspelled words correctly on the provided worksheet.
Game #2- Long /i/- i, y, igh Sorting
For this sorting activity, the students will sort long /i/– i, y, igh words within a pocket chart or on a magnetic board. (You can place magnets on the back of cards to make them magnetic.) As the students sort the fly cards, they will also use their decoding skills to read these words. After sorting the cards, they will choose three long /i/ words- one i, one -y, and one -igh word and write them within complete sentences on the provided worksheet.
Another idea may be to print out the fly cards twice in order to play Go Fish or Memory with them.
Game #3- Don't SPLAT the Fly- Long /i/- i, y, igh
Play this sight word game during small group or center time. The students will take turns picking cards out of container, bin, etc. If a student reads a word correctly, the student keeps the card. If read incorrectly, the student places card back in container. If a student picks a SPLAT card, all of that student’s cards get placed back into container. The player with the most cards in the end wins the game.
