Look Who’s Running Product Description:
This product came about while looking for a way to motivate my students to keep running for as long as they could. I wanted a system where my students could set a running goal and strive to achieve that goal throughout the schools year. Here’s how it works:
After our warm ups we spend time running. We normally camp out on one segment of time each month. We start out the year by setting a yearly goal and trying to run three minutes without stopping. With each new month that time is increased by one minute. Students are always given the opportunity to walk if the running gets to be too much. The first time they run a new increment of time they “Sign the Wall”. The second time they run an increment of time they sign a “T-Shirt”. The third time they run an increment of time they get to fill out a “Ticket” to win the “T-Shirt” everyone signed. The fourth time the student runs that increment of time he or she gets to sign “The Pin”. These bowling ball pins are used in various games throughout the school year.
The kids love it when I pull out a “Pin” from a previous year. They want to look for their name. Even my fifth graders are excited to find their name on a previous year’s pin. They also work hard to sign the current pin. Once the students understand the process and expectations, the total time (warm ups & running) consumes maybe 15 minutes. The cool part is they work on every component of their overall fitness before we ever get to the game.
On a management note: After they run, my students get water and report back to their alphabetical warm up spots. There they are given a number from 1-4. These numbers are tracked on an excel spreadsheet. (An editable version of this spreadsheet is included with this product.)The students then go to that labeled location in the gym to:
1. Sign the wall 2. Sign the T-Shirt 3. Sign the ticket 4. Sign the pin
***When we reach 5 minutes I start incorporating a warm up leader. These student led warm up are accomplished by handing a student one pack of “Leader Cards”. Check out a FREE sampling here! While running the leader says “Freeze, Jump, Freeze, Run” or “Freeze, Log Roll, Freeze, Run” It does break up the running, but they remain active the entire time. My walkers even join in on the fun!
