Quick Picture Strategy: "As I Walked Out One Evening" by W. H. Auden

The Quick Picture Strategy is used to promote critical thinking and stimulate growth while reading, enjoying, and interpreting poetry. Students generate quick images of ideas they produce in their minds. This process of personal creativity promotes associative recall; the students remember the significance of the drawing because no one is telling them what to draw.

Here are some of the skills students learn.

Understanding and interpreting the central idea
Through the creation of images in the mind, the Quick Picture, and the main idea statements the central idea of the learning is reinforced.

Evaluating the significance of information and data
As students create initial images in their minds, they make decisions as to what information and ideas are significant; these essential ideas are woven into the Quick Pictures.

Focused thinking
Each Quick Picture has a purpose that is defined by an “area of focus”. The area of focus centers student thinking to a particular purpose for thinking.

Analyzing the impact of information
Students explore the impact of imformation when establishing a relationship between the main ideas and the statement of importance.
