I have created this unit for my Transitional English IV class, a group of seniors who failed to meet the ACT benchmark and that are very unmotivated. This unit plan is designed to get students engaged with the novel Looking for Alaska through a series of Escape rooms. I created it with one goal in mind: to teach my seniors about the harsh realities of life while developing their critical thinking abilities and reinforce reading and writing skills.. Therefore, this unit plan asks them to tackle those difficult issues. These issues are relevant and I have tried to help them learn to deal with death, grief, guilt, and shame. Furthermore, the novel has a strong anti-alcohol message and presents the very real dangers of drinking and driving.
