Lord of the Flies movie review activity: If you are looking for a way to expose your students to more nonfiction reading and critical analysis, then this activity will do very well, and supplements the study of William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies” perfectly.
Students do NOT have to see the 1963 film “Lord of the Flies” directed by Peter Brook to complete this assignment. It is solely based on Bosley Crowther’s New York Times review of the movie found at http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9F0DE3D71731E33ABC4851DFBE668388679EDE; due to copyright reasons I cannot include the original review in this resource but you as a classroom teacher may make copies for your students. They can also work directly from the website. The review can be found doing a search with Google using the words “Lord of the Flies Bosley Crowther review”.
The set of ten questions has been designed in two formats - 1 page with just the questions or two pages with the questions and lines for student answers. An answer key is included.
Also included in this resource is an activity designed for students to choose another review of “Lord of the Flies” for which to write their own review.
Please look at the preview and at the New York Times review so that you can assess whether this activity would be right for you and your students.
