I created these cards and prompts for my own students (freshmen) as another way to reinforce the skill of notetaking during reading. Since they can’t write in their books, and some of them need a push in the right direction as far as WHAT to take notes on, I thought these would be useful.
I really didn’t have a plan when I created them as to how I would use them, but here are a few options:
+Require students to fill each of the 12 cards by the end of the book—that way they are ongoing, and students can always write more than one card per character
+Require students to focus on one or two specific characters through the book: that is, a card for Ralph for each of the 12 chapters, let’s say
+Make them a part of group discussions
+Utilize them during a Socratic circle
+Remind students to go at their own pace, or attempt to keep up with reading, but maybe surprise them and allow them for use on a quiz (preparedness counts!)
I am sure you can think of additional uses!
Blank card templates and prompt sheets for the following characters are included:
+Sam and Eric
+Robert and Bill
+The Lord of the Flies
I hope the prompts are useful and discussion worthy!
Teacher in the Rye
P.S. There is a blank card template for Sam and Eric, and another for when they become Samneric. I don’t give the latter out until that happens in the novel.
