This close reading guide micro-focuses on one pivotal scene from chapters 2-9 in Golding's novel to engage young readers in developing awareness of figurative language and its impact through literary vehicles such as metaphor, paradox, irony, allusion, and imagery. This guide stresses the construction of theme through each of these devices. A "1st read" and "2nd" read of the selected passage grooms students to narrow their sights and unpack language. High order thinking questions are placed in the marginalia of each guide to encourage students to interact with the text in a way that cultivates strong annotation practices. A close read final is included to encourage students to showcase independent analysis of the passage. Also within the close read final is a thematic mini essay prompt. The rationale for including chapters 2-9 is to press students to go back and create their own close read guides by group or independently.
